My WCCA Picks

Maybe I didn’t make myself clear before, in case anyone’s been wondering where I’ve been. I’ve been traveling for about a week and a half. First to move back into my house after the conclusion of the semester, then to Virginia to see my love, then to LA for E3. I’ll do bits about the stuff I saw at E3, and perhaps the experience itself, but first things first: My WCCA Noms, perhaps too late (my votes are in of course, but the relevance of my nomination picks may be past due is what I’m saying).

I didn’t nominate in all categories. Some categories I simply didn’t feel that strongly about. For a few, I didn’t nominate the full three. In those categories, only so many struck me at the point where I deliberated over these. And my picks aren’t necessarily what I think will win, or what I think is truly the best or most outstanding, but they’re my picks nonetheless. Some are ones I think definitely could win the award, and some are ones I think deserve the chance. I had a lot of fun with this, and I suppose that’s all that really matters.

So, without further ado, my picks for WCCAs (with commentary for the major award, if you have questions about the others, feel free to comment)…

Outstanding comic:

Questionable Content, by J. Jacques. I truly think this comic is deserving of that kind of recognition. QC stands out on its own, with its humor that ranges from intellectual to juvenile, and its story that ranges from mundane drama to wacky humor. It updates consistently, and it is entertaining with every strip. QC to me succeeds at everything an independent webcomic should, and for that it deserves recognition.

Perry Bible Fellowship, by Nicholas Gurewitch. For nearly the same reasons as Questionable Content, Perry Bible is as qualified for the award, if not more. PBF excels in being both artistic and hilarious, a combination hard to attain. And it too follows all the right methods for successful webcomicking.

Dominic Deegan, by Michael “Mookie” Terracciano. This is the choice that may receive a lot of arguments or turned heads, but I want to remind everyone that the award is for “Outstanding Webcomic,” and not “The World’s Best Webcomic.” But Dominic Deegan deserves recognition for being a truly unique adventure comic. There isn’t a single base that DD hasn’t touched on and worked well with. The story is compelling and flat out addicting. During my travel, this has been the one comic that was a “Must Check” priority for me. But DD deserves the award for having an astounding story and some of the most loveable characters. I can’t put it into words, but I firmly believe Dominic Deegan is an Outstanding Webcomic.

Heh, at least someone one nominated BadBlood XD — thanks Phil ;)

  2. Ugh…I seriously cannot stand Bigger Than Cheeses. I read through the entire archives, and they simply are not funny. Standard format is “Stupid thing, stupid thing, insult.” with the occasional horrific violence thrown in for good measure. Terrible, terrible comic.

  3. Although, having said that, I think that a lot of his features are great. The commentary added after his 100th comic, and his “search for the redrawn comic” idea were both great. And, needless to say, I loved the first Cheesecake month. The next few weren’t as good, but the first one really showcased how much his art had progressed.

Well yeah, Liriel. Your pencil renders flat out dazzle me.
